Acne is different from one person to the next. Smooth Exposure acne therapy starts with a conversation. We need to talk to you and learn about the history of the condition, the products you use on your face and the things you’ve tried in the past. We also want to examine your skin. After this initial consultation, we will explain what we recommend for improving your complexion.
Our acne treatments are designed primarily for people with active cystic acne and the treatments are intended to eliminate the acne inflammation which is a reaction to bacteria under the skin. Intense pulsed light is used to penetrate the skin and kill the bacteria. The bacteria that causes cystic acne is only able to thrive in an oxygen-free environment and that can exist if your skin is not breathing properly. This is why people with acne frequently have oily skin. Excess oil inhibits the normal function of skin pores and this condition can be compounded by cosmetics, dirt or anything else that comes in contact with your skin and which may clog pores. Acne is often associated with people that have thicker skin for the same reason – air is not passing freely through the skin. There are other components of a person’s physiology that creates an environment compatible with acne. For example, someone with a slower metabolism will usually have a slower rate of skin exfoliation. This means more dead skin cells sit on the skin’s surface longer and clog pores.
By killing the bacteria under the skin, the treatment removes the primary catalyst responsible for the redness and inflammation. Secondarily, the light treatment improves the character of the skin and opens pores. Frequently, we will combine microdermabrasion or chemical peels with the light therapy in order to improve the condition of your skin and change its character to make it less susceptible to new acne breakouts.
Controlling acne is a constant process. Even in a case where someone is taking prescription drugs to kill the bacteria that causes acne, the drugs much be ingested continuously to keep the acne at bay. At Smooth Exposure we use Intense Pulsed Light to kill the bacteria. But, whatever is used to kill the bacteria, if all of the other variables – like your skin – remain unchanged, then the acne will return if you stop using whatever is intended to kill the bacteria.
And that’s why we focus on helping you change the nature of your skin and the way you take care of it. We don’t want to just eliminate the acne. We want to make sure it doesn’t come back and the easiest and least-expensive way of doing that is by making sure that you are doing all the right things at home. Most of our acne clients will see us every 6 weeks or so for a treatment to supplement what they are doing at home, but we want to minimize your maintenance visits and do only what’s necessary to keep your skin in good condition.
